Company History

ESTAMPAS PORTEÑAS


Estampas Porteñas was founded in Buenos Aires in 1996 by the distinguished Argentine ballerina and choreographer, Carolina Soler. Beginning her career in classical ballet, Carolina Soler was well known and widely celebrated for her dazzling portrayals of traditional classical ballet roles. In Estampas Porteñas she returns to the dance form that is the heart and soul of Argentina.

In its first year, Estampas Porteñas toured China performing over 60 successful shows. On its return to Argentina, the company performed at the Cultural Centre General San Martin, enjoying popular and critical acclaim being described as “… dazzling the audience with talent, seduction and beauty”. In the same year the company created and performed Musica en Buenos Aires commissioned by the Government as a gift to the city.

Estampas Porteñas has performed at festivals around the world including the Caribbean Festival, the Havana Festival of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, Recoleta Viva Festival in Buenos Aires and the Beloruss Festival.

Carolina Soler


At the age of six in Lima, Peru Carolina Soler commenced her studies in dance at the Lima Municipal Ballet. In 1972 she entered the Choreartium Association Ballet, where she performed as a soloist and principal ballerina before completing her studies with masters such as Alexander Plissetky, Annel Vourenjuvry, Victori Roma and Yele Krnic – recording successes as a soloist in Swan Lake, Raymonda, Coppelia and Interplay and as principal  in Suite en Blanc, Paquita, Hansel & Gretel, Nocturnal and Giselle.

Awarded a scholarship in Buenos Aires she studied with Olga Ferri, Gloria Kasda, Rodolfo Fontán and Esther Knavaia and undertook a partnering course with Ricardo Novich. In 1978 she joined the resident ballet of the Teatro Colon where she had the opportunity to perform all the major works of the classical repertoire, winning plaudits as a prima ballerina in Aurora’s Wedding, Swan Lake, Coppelia, Don Quixote, Romeo & Juliet, Dvóršak’s Serenade and Emilia. She also danced for the Choreographic Workshop, working with Julio López and Rodolfo Olguin; performed with the Argentine Ballet and the Modern Jazz Ballet, touring nationally and internationally with the companies.

Her interest in tango began when she performed Tango Dance with Raul Garello, resulting in the 1996 formation of Estampas Porteñas. Carolina has undertaken the role of choreographer, principal dancer and artistic director of the Company. Carolina has led Estampas Porteñas on tours to many countries including Taiwan, China, Guatemala, Mexico, New Zealand and Australia.

For her wide ranging artistic endeavors Carloina was presented with the Adán Buenosayres Award in 1995.

 

 

The Singers

 

 

Javier di Ciriaco

Javier has participated in Tango & Folk Festivals all over Argentina; Cosquin Festival, Doma & Folklore Festival, National Festival of Tango “La Falda” & Peñas Festival (Villa Maria).
He has worked in many of the prestigious theatres around Argentina including San Martin Theatre (Cordoba) & Alvear Theatre (Buenos Aires). He has appeared in plays;
“Guapos de la Guardia Vieja” at the Teatro Astral in Buenos Aires, “Circle of Identity for the Theatre” at the San Martin Cultural Center in Buenos Aires with actress Virginia Lago & “Vola, Veni, Vola” a musical produced by Argentine poet Horacio Ferrer.
Javier has formed his own sextet Sexteto Milonguero & works with the Jorge Arduh Orchestra. He has toured Spain, Germany, Italy & Switzerland. He is a member of “Orquesta Tipica de Estilos Tangueros” (National Academy of Tango) in Buenos Aires.
In 2007 Javier first toured with Estampas Portenas in Tango Fire.

 

 

 

Franco Puig

Spain & The Nederlands Tour

 

Apart from being an outstanding singer, Franco is an accomplished guitarist. His vocal teacher was Profesor Laura Serrano & he learnt guitar with Pablo Budin. Franco won first prize for solo vocalist in the Baradera Festival & was invited to participate in the Festival de la Flor. He sings regularly in the most prestigous Tango Houses in Buenos Aires; Café Tortoni, La Casa de Anibal Troilo & AlmaTango. Franco has shared the stage with such luminaries of Argentine music as Maria Graña, Guillermo Fernandez, Juanjo Domínguez, Leonel Godoy & Nora Per.
An advocate of Argentine culture Franco has been involved in both Tango and the folk music of his country. He has toured extensively throughout Latinamerica performing in Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, Paraguay & Uruguay. Franco joined Estampas Portenas in late 2007.

Nelson Celis  & Yanina Fajar

Yanina & Nelson are well known around the Tango houses of Buenos Aires, performing regularly in a number of prestigious venues including Cambalache, La Ventana and Galeries Pacifico and have also made numerous television appearances in Argentina.

Their professional life as tango dancers has taken them around the world. They have performed in Italy, Spain and Peru at the International Festival of Dance and taken part in tours to Paraguay, the US and Japan

Yanina & Nelson have been in Estampas Portenas since 2003 & act as the chorographer’s assistants.

Pablo Sosa & Mariela Maldonado

Mariela and Pablo began their dancing partnership in 1996 with an appearance in Tango Mundo as part of the music expo in Buenos Aires. Since then they have danced in numerous tango shows throughout Argentina and the rest of Latin America, performed in the highly acclaimed tango show Tanguera and made a variety of television appearances in Argentina. Mariela and Pablo have also toured internationally including throughout Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and to the 2005 Edinburgh Festival.
In 2003 Mariela & Pablo started touring with the company.



 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mauricio Celis & Ines Cuesta


Ines Cuesta studied Corporeal Expression and Rhythmic Dance before spending seven years studying the art of tango.
Mauricio Celis studied tango for eight years and appeared in the acclaimed Tango Mitos, Opera Bay.
As a couple they have performed in several Tango houses including Cafe Tortoni, The Querandí, Taconeando, Esquina Carlos Gardel and Cambalache.
They have toured to Perú, Spain, Italy, Brasil, Paraguay and Chile.
Ines & Mauricio joined the company in 2005.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

German Cornejo & Carolina Giannini


German & Carolina studied tango from the age of 10 & 14 respectively. They learnt classical, contemporary dance & tango with many of Argentina’s most respected teachers including Mercedes Serrano, Mónica Fracchia, Cristina Cortés. José Garófalo, Carina Lozano, Guillermina Quiroga, Javier Rodríguez and Geraldine Rojas. German also studied jazz ballet & acrobatics. He has received many awards for dancing tango most notably Nuevos Talentos de Oro, Concurso de Baile de Oro awarded by the television programme Susana Gimenez on the TELEFE Channel in Argentina and World Champion of Tango in 2005. Both German & Carolina have performed at famous tango houses & milongas in Buenos Aires, Café Tortoni , La Manufactura Papelera, Señor Tango, Boca Tango, Mambo, Chiquin Buenos Aires, El Viejo Almacén, La Viruta, Porteño and Bailarín, Parakultural and Confitería Ideal. German appeared in Bien de Tango directored by Osvaldo Berlingeri & together the couple travelled throughout Japan with Buenos Tangos directed by Fabio Hager.
German & Carolina first joined Estampas Portenas in 2006.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Cristian Miño & Jorgelina Guzzi

Cristian & Jorgelina started dancing together in January 2007 & joined the
company in May 2007. They have taught masterclasses all over Europe and performed in Germany, Austria, Croatia, Italy & Belgium. They dance in the Tango Salon style with some elements of Tango Nuevo.
Jorgelina has performed at Tango festivals around the World including: Festival Berlin, Tokyo Tango Festival, Festival Internacional de Sitges, IV World Tango Festival Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Festival Internacional de Tango Fireworks, Los Ángeles. In 2006 she was a judge in the World Championship of the Tango Argentino, Buenos Aires in the category “stage dance”.
Cristian has worked with masters of the Tango Argentinos, Miguel Angel Zotto, Mariano “Chicho” Frumboli, & Sebastian Arce. He has performed in some of the most important Milongas in Buenos Aires; Canning, Niño Bien and Porteño y Bailarin and appeared at many of the famous Tango houses including Boca Tango and Che Tango. Cristian also teaches at Tango schools in Buenos Aires; Mora Godoy, Tango Brujo and Tango Elite Argentino.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Andrés Sautel & Celeste Medina

In 2004 Andres & Celeste began to dance together, performing in most of the Tango houses in Buenos Aires; Central Tango, Señor Tango, Chiquilín Tango, Museo del Tango & Viejo Almacén, also appearing on TV in Argentina numerous times.
They have taken part in the productions Piazzolla Tango, Tango Servicio Tararira, Michael Bolton in concert at the Colon Theatre in Buenos Aires, Una Noche en Buenos Aires & Buenos Aires de Tango touring Japan and Brasil.
Andres & Celeste have performed in many festivals including the 2006 La Plata International Tango Festival  and the 2007 Buenos Aires Tango Festival with the Federico Mizrahi Orchestra in Tango Launge.
Andres & Celeste first danced with Estampas Portenas in 2007.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Cristian Gallardo & Betina Botana

Betiana studied Classical Ballet & Contemporary Dance at the Escuela Municipal de Danza in Buenos Aires.  She undertook lessons in Jazz Ballet & Contemporary Dance with Manuel Vallejos, Laura Roatta & Michael Kadisova.  Betiana has participated in Festivals in Argentina & Latin America in Contemporary & Classical Ballet and studied Argentine Folk Dance under the instruction of Norma Viola.
Cristian obtained a degree in Folk Dance & Tango at IUNA. He danced in the Ballet Folklorico Nacional directed by Norma Viola. Cristian has performed in many of the Tango Houses in Buenos Aires; Taconeande, Piazolla Tango, Airers de Buenos Aires & Senor Tango. Cristian has toured to Russia, China, Spain, Switzerland, France & many South American countries.
Together Cristian & Betiana have taken instruction from Leonardo Cuello, Rosa & Carlitos Perez, Daniel”Flaco” Garcia, Alejandra Martinan and Corina de la Rosa & Julio Balmaceda.
They joined Estampas Portenas in late 2007.
